A field trip to "The Nest"

Hope Street students get a bird's eye view of what it takes to design and renovate our new childcare center.

Students visit The Nest

Hope Street students and staff with representatives Perkins+Will, Lionakis and Slater Builders.

This month, a group of 10 middle and high school students who are attending our “Virtual School” visited Hope Street’s fourth early care and education center--The Nest--which is under construction and scheduled to open in early 2021. The center, located at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in South Los Angeles, will provide high-quality childcare services for 32 low income families.

When LAUSD (Los Angeles Unified School District) moved to distance learning this year, Hope Street opened as a “Virtual School” for 50 students, providing laptops and a safe, nurturing space to participate in their remote classes. After the school day ends, students enjoy sports and recreation, art, dance and other enrichment activities.

On their field trip, students had the opportunity to learn about architecture, engineering and construction directly from professionals in each field. Representatives from architecture firms Perkins+Will and Lionakis spoke about the design process and what's needed for a successful career in architecture such as good communication and math skills as well as an interest in design and animation. Ted Slater, with contractor Slater Builders, stressed that a career in construction and engineering is within every student’s reach regardless of gender and that many companies have women in leadership positions now more than ever. Students also introduced themselves and shared their interests and goals for the future. Sherley, a high school senior, said “all of this is very interesting to me and I can see myself going into this field through one avenue or another.”

Thank you to Perkins+Will, Slater Builders and Lionakis for hosting and inspiring our students!
