California Check-up: 2023 Philanthropic and Tax Planning Symposium

This half-day symposium on Wednesday, October 25, 2023 will feature a keynote and three educational sessions focused on gifting and planning techniques that align with recent changes in estate and income tax laws, and the current economic landscape. Attendance is limited.

Earn continuing education credits

  • Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards: CHMC Foundation is a CFP Board CE Sponsor.  A total of four (4) CFP Board CE hours may be earned for successful completion of this course.
  • California Board of Accountancy: Continuing Professional Education (CPE) credits for CPAs through the CBA are self-reported. This course follows the provider requirements outlined in California Code of Regulations sections 88.1 and 88.2.
  • California State Bar: Approved for four (4) hours of Legal Specialist Minimum Continuing Legal Education (LSMCLE) and Minimum Continuing Legal Education (MCLE) credit. Specialty areas:  Estate Planning, Trust & Probate Law and Taxation Law.

Keynote Session: California Tax Updates 2023 

12:15 pm – 1:15 pm

The Franchise Tax Board’s Executive Officer Selvi Stanislaus will discuss the current state of taxes in California, including insights on new tax laws, residency, and new tax credits. This session will allow participants to comprehend recent tax law changes, gain a better understanding of issues of California residency and related tax implications as well as new tax credits for Californians, and gain insights into the current state of the Franchise Tax Board.

Session 1 | Nothing is Certain Except Taxes at Death: A Review of Tax Elections Relating to Trust and Estate Administration

This session will examine the tax elections available to a fiduciary when filing a decedent’s final income tax return; explore possible income tax elections while a fiduciary is administering an estate; and analyze the tax elections a fiduciary may consider when trying to minimize transfer taxes (i.e., estate, gift, and generation skipping transfer).

Session 3 | Tax and Estate Planning: Intergenerational Transfer of Real Estate, Pre-sale Tax Planning and the Importance of Valuations

This session will explore property, income and estate tax considerations related to real property transfers and how they should be factored into estate plans, including recent key updates to city tax measures related to real property transfers; and common estate planning pitfalls.  Participants will also develop an understanding of the valuation process, including what to look for and what questions to ask, and common errors made.
