From sustainability to ecosystems: Weeks 2 and 3 of Hope Street’s Summer of Science continues to cultivate scientific wonder
Over the past three weeks, Hope Street Margolis Family Center's Summer of Science program has continued to inspire curiosity and deepen scientific understanding through immersive, hands-on experiences in wildlife biology, ecology and sustainability.
During Wildlife Biology Week, students explored the inner workings of animal anatomy through a supervised pig dissection, guided by California Hospital Medical Center doctors and hospital staff who volunteered their time and expertise. This rare opportunity gave our young scientists an up-close look at organ systems, biological functions and the similarities between species—sparking thoughtful questions about evolution, health and the complexity of living organisms. To complement their anatomical studies, students also learned about natural habitats, constructing their own ecosystems using materials like clay, sticks, paper and fabric. These creations reflected their understanding of predator-prey relationships, food chains and the delicate balance required to sustain life. A field trip to the Aquarium of the Pacific and the LA Zoo allowed them to observe living ecosystems firsthand, bringing classroom concepts to life.
The following week shifted focus to sustainability and culinary science. Students dug into soil science, composting and plant growth, learning how nutrients cycle through the environment. They participated in cooking demonstrations led by professional chefs—including Chef Michelle Lainez (who also serves on Hope Street's Advisory Board)—who introduced them to sustainable food practices like farm-to-table sourcing, reducing food waste and seasonal eating. The week ended with a field trip to Tanaka Farms, where students explored sustainable agriculture in practice, picked fresh produce and saw how science informs every stage of food production.
These weeks have helped students develop foundational scientific skills: observation, critical thinking, experimentation and inquiry. They are not only learning facts—they are learning how to ask questions, test ideas, and see themselves as scientists.
