New Grand Tower at California Hospital Medical Center Set to Transform Healthcare in Downtown Los Angeles
$215M+ Patient Tower Opens January 7, 2025
LOS ANGELES (January 2, 2025) – Dignity Health - California Hospital Medical Center (CHMC) is proud to announce its new, state-of-the-art Grand Tower, featuring an expanded Emergency department, a new Trauma Unit, a redesigned Family Birth Center and an advanced Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) dedicated to providing specialized care for our most vulnerable newborns.

"The Grand Tower represents a significant investment in the health and well-being of our community," says Jill Welton, Market President. "This thoughtfully designed facility significantly expands CHMC’s emergency, trauma, and maternal care services, providing families with advanced care close to home, addresses critical healthcare gaps, and reinforces our mission to improve health equity for the 85,000 residents and 500,000 workers of downtown Los Angeles."
Our new Emergency Department has more than doubled in size, allowing for the integration of cutting-edge technology, more specialized care areas—including dedicated pediatric ER rooms—and a streamlined patient experience. Additionally, we've expanded trauma services, including the addition of advanced trauma bays, increased staffing for rapid response, and specialized treatment areas to ensure faster, more effective care for critically injured patients. The new ER has also been designed to improve care delivery and reduce wait times, with a newly designed waiting room that provides a calm and soothing environment for families, while private spaces ensure greater comfort during consultations and family discussions. The increased capacity will enable the hospital to treat more patients, reduce ambulance diversions, and ultimately improve health outcomes.
For expectant mothers and newborns, the Grand Tower features a private entrance to the fully redesigned Family Birth Center, complete with private triage, antepartum, and birthing rooms. The maternity care enhancements include 28 private postpartum rooms, ensuring greater comfort and privacy for new mothers, as well as 24 private rooms in the NICU, replacing the previous ward-style setup. Families will now be able to bond with their newest arrivals in a peaceful, private setting. Additionally, three state-of-the-art surgical suites and a children’s play area in the birth center waiting room highlight CHMC’s commitment to creating a family-friendly, advanced care environment.
The Grand Tower underscores CHMC’s commitment to addressing the needs of underserved communities in downtown Los Angeles, many of whom face barriers to healthcare access. By offering culturally sensitive, patient-centered care and leveraging cutting-edge technology, the new facility will help reduce disparities and promote greater health equity across the region.
“The opening of our new Grand Tower marks a transformative moment for health care in downtown Los Angeles," says Alina Moran, Hospital President at California Hospital Medical Center. "This state-of-the-art facility, made possible in part through generous philanthropic support, reinforces our commitment to providing advanced, equitable care that serves all Angelenos for generations to come."
